52 association for women in science | winter 2015 awis@work AWIS Summit Recap National Summit on Innovation & Entrepreneurship: A Roadmap for Inclusion By Heather Metcalf, PhD AWIS Director of Research and Analysis F or nearly 45 years, the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) has been driving excellence in science, technolo- gy, engineering and mathematics by supporting equity and full participation of women in all disciplines and across all sectors. Our commitment to women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) includes providing a platform for important stakeholders to engage in serious dialogue and exchange about shaping positive systemic change. Summit Overview As part of this research-driven advocacy work, on September 22, 2015 in Oakland, California, we gathered researchers, policy makers and practitioners from academia, government and industry at our second National Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship to lay the roadmap for addressing equity issues at the nexus of STEM, innovation and entrepreneurship. We partnered with the University of California to focus the dialogue on how our society can develop successful and inclusive systems to drive research excellence, economic growth and innovative solutions to many challenges in our world. Keynote Highlights Tequity Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf laid the groundwork for the event by discussing the desire to be intentional in growing the innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem in Oakland. Mayor Schaaf charged the stakeholders in attendance to construct an ecosystem that not only has creativity and drive, but is also diverse and inclusive of historically marginalized communities and the issues that affect those communities. "Tequity," she explained, "[is] the idea that technology can be a tool for driving equity. Equity is something that we want, and we have to be intentional about how we are going to harness our resources to get there … [This ecosystem must be] one that is looking to solve not just first world problems, but the problems that matter. How about disrupting inequity?" Inclusion and Accountability This call to "tequity," awareness, intentionality, and organizational responsibility was woven throughout each of the day's sessions. In a discussion on "The Ideal Ecosystem," Laura Furstenthal, managing partner at McKinsey & Company, and Brian Frank, vice president of global sales operations at LinkedIn, emphasized the importance of addressing unconscious bias throughout organizations seeking to create cultures of inclusion that recruit, retain and advance Janet Napolitano, President of the University of California Sara Radcliffe, President and CEO, California Life Sciences Association
